The Big Five
Collection

The "Big Five" is a term given to the five most sought-after wild animals in Africa, based on their rarity, beauty, and the difficulty of finding them in the wild. These limited edition wines, representing each of the five famous animals, conjure up the magnificence of these noble creatures and the beautiful lands they inhabit.

The Big 5 Collection is produced at the Climor Winery located in Worcester. Climor procures the best grapes available from 700 ha of neighboring farms in the Robertson Swellenham & Worcester districts of the Breede River Valley, as well as, from it's own vineyards in Paarl and Durbanville.

Night harvesting and gentle handling at the cellar are key factors that our winemakers oversee with farmers in order to maintain consistent style & quality. Before fermentation all juices are improved by skin contact at very low temperatures, and then placed in stainless steel tanks until finished. The main focus is to maintain full varietal character and well balanced wines.

Robertson is characteristic of sandy, alluvial and organic fertile soils where vines grow prolifically and are influenced by the south-easterly breezes that cool down the late afternoons during summer. Wine farmers in their quest for lower yields, hence better quality, have progressively moved onto higher altitudes finding more clay and limestone contents as well as a cooler climate, resulting in a revolution in quality with emerging stars such as Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. Worecester's vineyards are traditionally sitting in feritle alluvial soils, but as in it's nieghbor Robertson there been a migration up to the hills. Taking advantage of it's several areas, back in 1995 viticultural consultants started pinpointing such for specific varietals finding best suitable regions for each grape.

Big Five Collection White Wines

2004 Sauvignon Blanc "The Rhinoceros"

WINE ENTHUSIAST:
BEST BUY

Rating 85

Opens with a soft mineral-herb bouquet. The rounder style continues on the palate, but ample citrus and white pepper notes keep it from being flaccid or mushy. Closes fairly long with a nice reprise of the early mineral notes. An appealing, well-done mainstream white.

2004 Chardonnay "The Leopard"

WINE ENTHUSIAST:
BEST BUY
Rating 87

This attractive white opens with a handsome peach and herb nose. The even palate's good fruit/acid balance supports solid fruit in the style of the bouquet. Closes clean with drier mineral notes. Flavorful, with some unique character, and commendably off the predictable track.

Lean and dry with very dark red fruit, tobacco, menthol, and plenty of that specific South African earthiness.....

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon "The Lion"

WINE ENTHUSIAST:

Rating 84

Rich, almost sweet cherry fruit has pine/menthol accents and a caramel-like note on the nose. The dry palate shows firmer-than-expected tannins but ample cherry-chocolate flavor, as well......

2003 Shiraz (Syrah) "The Buffalo"

WINE ENTHUSIAST:
BEST BUY

Rating 85

Attractive lighter-style Shiraz with a complex nose offering berry fruits, herbs, incense and shoe polish notes. Lithe and racy, with bright red fruit flavors and tangy acidity, it's appealing and not entirely typical?this one shows a little character.

Diemersdal Estate Wines
Durbanville, South Africa

This historic farm was originally granted to Dutchman Hendrik Sneeuwine in 1698, whose widow subsequently married Captain Diemer. The Captain deserted his ship to be with her and live on the farm, hence the name Diemersdal.

Three hundred years later Diemersdal is still a thriving wine estate, complete with a gracious Cape Dutch homestead and rolling green vineyards as far as the eye can see. For over 100 years now it has been home to the Louw family.

The estate's excellent drainage and close proximity to the sea give these dryland vineyaards deep red soil which produces wines of rich concentration and complex fruit flavors.
