Ludwig Neuhaus

This original family-owned company, which was founded in 1860, expanded from a single estate with various vineyard holdings to a company carrying a wide selection of fine German wines. It is now managed by the fourth generation and is one of the largest and most modern wineries in Germany. The facilities are capable of bottling 40,000 bottles an hour, supported by an average capacity of 27 million liters. Exports, go to over 25 countries world wide. A profound dedication to quality and value will remain Ludwig Neuhaus' supreme objective.

German wines are well known for their acid freshness, and a lot of them have a relatively low alcohol content. The German appellation system is built according to areas on one hand, and ripeness level on the other hand, measured analytically in degree of grape sugar at the harvest time.

Wines are divided into Tafelwein and Qualitatswein categories. The Qualitatswein includes two subcategories: Q.B.A and QmP.

Q.B.A (Qualitatswein Bestimmter Anbaugebiete) is a category of fine wines made of grapes of eleven delimited regions of origin, which have ripened sufficiently to ensure the traditional style of the wine. It is the category including the largest quantity of wine.

The Liebfraumilch is a special very famous Q.B.A. designation, which stems from an ecclesiastic vineyard in the cathedral city of Worms. The official definition is a wine of medium sweetness.

The vines of Liebfraumilch are made of grapes from the areas of Rheinpfalz, Nahe or Rheingau. The blend has to be predominantly (70%) made of Riesling, Silvaner, MullerThurgau or Kerner grapes.

Q.m.P (Qualitatswein mit Pradikat) This category defines the finest wines of Germany with no sugar added. It means "Quality wine with special distinction", or "attribute". These "attributes" are indicated by the six following specific sub categories inside the QMP.

Kabinett: a fine, usually light wine made of normally ripe grapes, usually the lightest and driest of the QMP categories.

Spätlese (literally late harvest) a fine wine of superior quality made from grapes that have been harvested at least 7 days after the normal harvest.

Auslese (selectively harvested) elegant and usually sweeter. This is one step up from Spätlese. Auslese is late harvested from selected bunches. In some exceptional years, the grapes are affected by a noble mold called "botrytis cinerea". It evaporates the water in their juice, concentrating their sugar and flavor, making the wine richer.

Eiswein is a wine made from frozen grapes. This concentrates the sugars and flavors. Eiswein is usually a Beerenauslese (sometimes Trockenbeerenauslese).

Beerenauslese (Berry selection) is a wine made of individually selected berries - and even more careful selection with more concentrated sugars and flavors than Auslese.

Trockenbeerebauslese made of dried up, individually picked grapes. The berries are dried, resulting in an exceptionally concentrated, sweet, honey like wine.
