Castellblanch Wines

Founded in 1908 by Jeronimo Parera Figueres as a family business, Bodega Castellblanch, S.A. has since grown into one of the largest and most respected makers of cava wines in the world. Today more that 1.5 million cases of Castellblanch are sold throughout the world.

Castellblanch first gained international recognition at the International Wine Exhibition in Barcelona in 1930 by creating hand-crafted cava grown on the upper hillsides of the Penedes (pen-eh-DES) and kept on the yeast in naturally cool hillside caves.

Since then, the wines of Castellblanch have been regulars in shows and select tastings. In 1984, Freixenet, S.A., the worlds largest producer of sparkling wine acquired Castellblanch. In 1986 they began importing to these shores.

THE GRAPES

Castellblanch sparkling wines are made using three different indigenous white grapes: Macabeo (mak-a-BAY-o), a delicate grape which adds elegance and finesse to the Mnes, Parellada (Par-e-YAH-dah), which provides a delightful floral aroma, fresh clean flavors and balanced acidity; and Xarello (Sha-REL-lo), the aromatic, earthy grape which gives the wines their strength and color.

$10.00 Elegant and restrained, this lithe, lean cava plays up dry citrus fruit and precise mouth feel while not going too heavy on the dosage. Flavors run toward apple and pineapple, and the finish is perfectly lean and clean. A lasting note of green apple is an encouraging final touch.

An absolutely crisp and refreshing, totally bone-dry, zero-dosage cava from Spain; Flavors are bright and minerally and quite reminiscent of good Italian Prosecco.

"86Pts"

($10.00) Kicks off with aromas of liqourice gumdrops, wild flower, and light stone fruits. Offers lime and sugared candy in the mouth along with a touch of banana and a ripe apple. Finishes sweet, almost as if were dessert. Fortunately, some lively acidity keeps it fresh.

($9.00) Adequate citrus and apple aromas lead in a flavor profile of green apple lemon chiffon cake. Ample drive and persistence are positive.

($10.00) Dark and Rosy, with a sweet strawberry fizz-like bouquet. The palate is firm and the flavor package delivers a full of ripe tangerine and nectarine. Yes, it tastes somewhat like a confection, meaning it's rather sweet, but the balance and acids are right there, so it goes down well.
