Vega Riaza

Vega Riaza is produced by Bodegas Valdubon, which was founded in 1997. The winery is located in the village of Milagros, close to Aranda de Duero, the capital of the Ribera del Duero region. Bodegas Valdubon owns 40 hectares of vineyards of Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo) in the Ribera del Duero.

Ribera del Duero is a Denomination of Origin, a classification of quality wines in Spain. The Regulating Council of Ribera del Duero controls the origin and characteristics of the grapes and wines, which guarantees that the consumer receives the highest quality wine. Each bottle is entitled to carry the Ribera del Duero label on its back.

The wines of Ribera del Duero are respected worldwide for their quality, and are accepted as among Spain's very finest wines.

THE GRAPES
Vega Riaza is made mainly from the grape variety Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo). This is Spain's principal red grape, used in many different regions. Tinta del Pais makes splendid, fruity young wines and lovely, spicy Crianzas as well as Reservas in Ribera del Duero.

The Wines

Crianza

Nice mint notes accent berry aromas. Flavors of coffee, burnt cherry and toast seem sturdy and legit, while the finish is lean, clean and only modestly tannic. Nicely balanced and solid; a wine that doesn't bite off more than it can chew.

Roble

Traditional maceration and pumping process. Two months in Bordeaux casks, 50% French, 50% American oak. 5,500 cases of six bottles produced.

Grape variety:

100% Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo)

Appearance: This wine has an intense cherry red color with hints of ruby/mauve.

Nose: Complex aromas with well integrated toasted oak and fruit.

Palate: Excellent balance between the fruit and oak. Mature fruit aromas combine with hints of smoke and a backbone of wood.

Spicy and rubbery on the nose, with a touch of heavy fruit providing the base. Shows ample cherry and berry flavors, but that fruit is a bit high-toned, meaning the back palate is mildly acidic and slightly sour. Needs food, with which it should fit the bill.
